It is now two years since we wrote last about The Herald newspaper. No wonder. We simply do not take this newspaper off the stands so that we are largely and blissfully unaware of its current credentials.
However, some two months ago we read, somewhere, something about an organisation called The Scottish Newspaper Society. Up till then, we hadn't a clue such an organisation existed. Try as we might, we still do not have the foggiest idea why such an organisation exists but we did see that it runs something called Newspaper of the Year, Journalist of the Year, and things like that.
Actually, and truthfully, we have been so intrigued these past two months that we have been taking all sorts of newspapers home with us every time we were over town so that (a) we could judge for ourselves and (b) hope for a prize ourselves. We'll write about The Scottish Newspaper Society separately but, meantime, back to The Herald.
In the front page main story of Thursday July 28 someone called Tom Gordon, whom The Herald describes as its Political Editor, ran an article over a Scottish Council leader forced to resign after yet another of the SNP's many sexual scandals. In the article, the Council leader involved expressed regret at his conduct but Mr Gordon continued that the councillor 'cited his own mental health as his principle reason for standing down, but said he would remain a councillor for Bellshill'.
If Mr Gordon does not know the difference between the words 'principle' and 'principal' then our advice is that he should return to Primary One and start all over again. As for The Herald, the sooner everyone bales out of the sinking ship - where circulation has fallen below 12,000 - the better.
